Wednesday Yarn Along...

I found an online fabric store going out of business and stocked up on lots of 100 percent cotton fabric to make diapers at a huge discount!  I was able to get lots of touch tape and aplix and even some snaps to try at 50 percent off.  She didn't have lots left but I bought what I could.  I think I bought like 5 yards of that alphabet flannel fabric at like 1.49 a yard.  For that price, I can be happy with having tons of diapers in that same, basic, fabric.  After all, one of the reasons I am cloth diapering, is to save money!  I did originally buy a mother-ease diaper, a sposoeasy diaper, and one other.  And honestly, I much prefer my home made diapers.  They fit bitter, they are slimmer, and Benjamin prefers them.  I don't think they are extremely absorbent, but that isn't my goal, because when Benjamin is wet, I don't plan to have him wet multiple times before I change him.  I want to change him right after he wets himself.  Who would want to go around with wet underwear on for any length of time??  :)  They are absorbent enough and if I needed to add more absorbency I could just add a liner.  Anyway, now I just have to geared up to start sewing about 35 diapers! I want to make about 15 more for Benjamin, and then about 20 for the new baby.

I am reading the book "Plain and Amish", which is very interesting.  I have always sort of idolized the Amish and I got the book (found it at the Thrift store) to give me ideas to live more simply and do more things by hand.  That appeals to me so much!  But I've found the book is more about the history of the Amish and the Amish religious beliefs, which has been quite eye-opening.  I love so many things about their way of life, I just pray that God would open their eyes to His love, for everyone, even us "Englishers".

The other book, "The Little Duke", I am reading to the boys for history.  It is a fiction book, not at all a history text, but we are learning so much about medieval times from this story.  It is difficult to read due to the fact that it was written a long time ago, and there are quite a few words I don't understand, but we all get the general jist  (SP?) of the story, and it is really quite good!  I would definitely recommend it for learning about medieval times, as well as, it is unfolding into a really neat story about a spoiled little boy, who through life circumstances, is changed into a very compassionate little boy who is a great example for my boys.

the book Plain & Amish looks interesting; I'll have to check it out.
I'm not sure what type of diapers you make - but I have been making my kiddos pocket-style dypes for about 4 years now. I've found that the trimmest, most absorbent inserts are microb=fiber towels that I purchased from Sam's. I just fold them in thirds & stick in the diaper. They come out & unfold in the wash - so the get nice & clean and they dry quickly :-)

Hi, Ginny's sister! Wow, 35 diapers, I am impressed! Both of your books sound great!

The diapers will most likely go quickly. I remember having 3, 3 and under in cloth diapers. I didn't take the plunge with cloth until my 3rd was born. That 'wet' diaper helped my 1st and 2nd potty train FAST!
I also have always been fascinated with the Amish and love reading books by Beverly Lewis.

What a wonderful find to be able to get your fabric at such a discount! I would love to make diapers for my next little one. I bought cloth last time but they are all so worn out that I thought it would be fun to make them this time instead of buying :) I hope you will share photos of your finished ones :)
